Record-Breaking Heat Threatens Lives of People and Pets

Heat waves are becoming more common as our climate changes. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, major cities averaged two heat waves per year in the 1960s. That's up to six per year today. Individual events and the timeframe in which these extreme temperatures can occur are also getting longer.

Heat waves can have serious health impacts, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Deaths due to extreme heat are among the highest compared to other natural disasters, and they can also occur in pets. These events can also lead to wildfires that force evacuation orders and destroy homes, impacting countless other people and pets. 

When extreme heat events impact communities, Greater Good Charities assesses needs with partners across the nation to provide supplies, financial support, and care packs. Food, vaccines, beds, toys, and other necessities have also been sent to animal shelters to help them take in more pets during heat waves.
